Why the Mazda 6 is Still a Great Buy

2025-06-11

You may have heard: the Mazda 6 has been discontinued. After more than two decades in the industry and over 150,000 vehicles sold, Mazda has axed this iconic model due to the market shifting to SUVs and crossovers. The Mazda 6e, its electric successor, was made for the Chinese market but quickly approved for the UK and South Africa. Whether it will make its way to Australia remains unknown but for now, it’s the end of an era.

If you’re browsing new cars (or second-hand ones), however, there’s no reason to write off the Mazda 6. Available in both sedan and family wagon configurations, this popular mid-range vehicle represents the pinnacle of Mazda’s distinctive Kodo design. Its Skyactiv technology and acute responsiveness make for a driving experience that’s as safe as it is enjoyable.

Aspley Mazda has a wide variety of new and used cars in Brisbane including the entire new Mazda range. No matter what kind of Mazda you’re looking for, we can provide it for you while making the experience of car shopping much easier and more pleasant. Here’s our guide to why the 6 still holds up if you’re looking for the right Mazda.

Why the Mazda 6 was discontinued

Initially known as the Mazda Atenza, the Mazda 6 was first introduced in Australia in 2002. The model enjoyed over 20 years of success, winning 23 awards in 16 countries and popularising Mazda’s now-famous ‘Zoom-Zoom’ brand message. After such a successful run, there are a few reasons this model is wrapping it up in 2025:

A changing market

Sales have been slowly declining as the market shifts away from mid-sized sedans and towards SUVs and crossovers for their perceived practical benefits.

Decreased profitability

This shift in consumer tastes have made it more profitable for Mazda to focus on other kinds of vehicles beside the 6, and reduced the pay-off of producing new models.

ADR 98/00 Compliance

The federal government’s Australian Design Rule 98/00 mandates that all new vehicles sold after March 1, 2025 must meet specific technical requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB). Despite its many safety features and innovations, this is a hurdle the 6 doesn’t clear.

Benefits of the Mazda 6

In spite of its discontinuation, the Mazda 6 remains a great buy for those who are looking for a sedan or wagon. Whether you buy it new or second-hand, here are some of the benefits of this Mazda model:

Skyactiv technology

Mazda’s Skyactiv technology is a suite of engineering solutions encompassing everything from the engine to the chassis to the body structure. It’s focused on optimising fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and enhancing driving performance in a number of different ways. The 6 utilises Mazda’s SkyActiv technology with the Skyactiv-G 2.5L engine designed to enhance fuel economy during cruising.

High-level safety features

Recent Mazda 6 models are equipped with features to help protect the safety of your whole family even when you’re dealing with busy city streets. There’s a 360-degree view monitor with reverse speakers, Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go.

High quality, stylish design

Inside and outside, the 6 is a sleek sedan with both functionality and style. Elegant on the inside and out, it comes with a suite of useful features: a crystal-clear multi-information display panel, heated seats for cold mornings and premium-quality Bose surround sound speakers, among other features.

Reliability and value

The 6 is considerably more affordable than a lot of other cars on the market, and has a well-deserved reputation for reliability. If you want a safe bet for a car that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, it’s one of the best models to choose.
