In 2025, it went through its most profound evolution yet with the addition of new safety features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control as well as enhanced comfort and entertainment options. If you need any more convincing, here’s the Aspley Mazda guide to some of the lesser-mentioned facts that make the BT-50 shine.
It’s the result of almost 100 years of experience and innovation
Mazda has been making trucks and Utes for a very long time. The brand’s first was a three-wheeled truck called the Mazda Go, built in 1931. In 1961, Mazda launched the B1500 Compact Ute, the brand’s first four-wheel light pick-up truck. By the time the original BT-50 was born in 2006, Mazda had decades of experience combining engineering innovation with modern sophistication and style. The current BT-50 is the culmination of those long years of hard work.
Mazda offers 14 tailored BT-50 accessory packs
Mazda offers a vast catalogue of over 100 genuine accessories for the BT-50, typically grouped into purpose-built accessory packs designed to complement your work and lifestyle. These 14 accessory packs are all designed in Australia and rigorously tailored to meet the different needs of BT-50 owners. Examples include the Boss Touring Pack for those who need to drive long distances with caravans and the SP Pro Pack for dedicated off-road enthusiasts.
The transmission can imitate a manual gearbox
The BT-50 is widely known for its fuel efficiency. But one of the ways in which it accomplishes better fuel economy is by having an automatic transmission that can impersonate a manual. When the transmission is in third, fourth, fifth or sixth gear, the torque converter locks and prevents drive losses, much like a manual gearbox’s clutch. This helps you optimise your fuel efficiency on the road while cruising along at a higher speed.
It has an excellent wading depth for crossing water
When travelling offroad, water crossings can be risky even if muddy splashes are fun. But water crossings always have to be approached carefully. The BT-50 has a wading depth of 800mm to allow you to safely travel through deeper bodies of water than many other Utes. The intake placement of the engine helps prevent water ingress while the differential breather pipes have been plumbed up through the body past the 800mm point.
It’s built to handle other types of challenging terrain too
The BT-50’s locking rear differential ensures that the rear wheels all turn at the same speed, ensuring equal drive torque and maximum traction off-road.
It uses pressure effectively
Like diamonds, the BT-50’s fuel efficiency is formed under pressure. More specifically, the diesel fuel in the turbo-diesel engine is pressurised to 250 MPa before it’s injected into the engine. This extreme pressure is on par with the pressure at approximately 2.5 kilometres beneath the ocean and is one-eighth of the pressure required to make diamonds. This turns the diesel fuel into a fine mist that reduces emissions and provides an efficient complete burn.
It’s oh so quiet
Due to its clever use of insulation, the interior of the BT-50 has a notably quiet cabin with a refreshing silence and stillness.
