Are Mazda BT-50’s Any Good?

November 7, 2022

You’re asking, we’re here to answer. Are Mazda BT-50’s any good? Well, first up, we obviously sell Mazdas, so it’s worth pointing out that our ethos of matching the right driver with the right car extends beyond any model or even brand, given that we also sell used cars from a broad range of car manufacturers. If we don’t think the BT-50 is good for you, then we’ll recommend something else. It’s as simple as that. Which means that our approach to this question is going to be based on needs and not simply us spruiking why the BT-50 beats out any other choice you might be looking to make.

That aside though, it’s pretty excellent. For the right person.

Who is the BT-50 for?

Being a ute, some folks would be obvious. Tradies, four wheel driving enthusiasts, camping enthusiasts, farmers and couriers would be what immediately come to mind. But a few lesser remembered customers for this roomy and powerful vehicle include musicians (for lugging around gear), artists (such as prop artists, anyone doing installations, or photographers needing to move large equipment), motorbike/motocross lovers, roadies, large dog lovers, and those who just generally move around from regional to city areas as a matter of course are just some of the other useful applications for this particular model.

People tend to think of utes as being very specific when in fact they can be quite versatile and suit a wide range of different people, lifestyles and uses.

What can it do?

Mazdas have a well deserved reputation for agility in handling and excellent quality engines that give you that signature “zoom zoom” feel. With the BT-50, you get that plus more. Despite being a larger vehicle we’ve not let that mean that agility is sacrificed. You’ll be just as comfortable getting around the city as you will going off the beaten track on a weekend away. This ute is nothing if not adaptive. Smooth in town but more than capable off-road isn’t something you get every day, but that’s the intended difference with this car.

Not to mention the design style with which you’ll be getting from A to B in, however different or far a way B might be from A. We also have a reputation for offering that little something extra when it comes to comfort and aesthetics, with the BT-50 being no exception. From class-leading leather interiors, to the latest tech in in-car infotainment and centre console display, to a sleek exterior design that’s easy on the eye as opposed to the “besser block on wheels” aesthetic many similar vehicles are sporting, you’ll love what you’re getting around in.

Performance

A key part of the answer when asking are Mazda BT-50’s any good, this is where the the vehicle really shines. Sporting a 3.5 tonne towing capacity, you can pretty much connect the dots from there on how powerful this thing is under the hood. Ranging from a 1.9L to a 3.0L turbo diesel, you’re looking at 110kW/350Nm | 140kW/450Nm 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC intercooled turbo diesel. Not to mention that this powerhouse gets 7.7L per 100km combined fuel consumption.

Value for money

Starting from $40,661, depending on your chosen model, add-ons and specifications, it’s a bit hard to do a comparison, but when you consider what you get for the price, we’re very confident that it’s competitive. We’re known for it. A small car this ain’t. So as far as the lower end of the spectrum is concerned it’s an absolute steal, while on the higher end of things such as the BT-50 Thunder you’re getting additions such as what’s outlined here in CarsGuide that no-one could argue are worth the money and add value to your ride.

Add to that the 5 year unlimited kilometre warranty and the fact that a well maintained vehicle (even if you’re pushing it hard) should last a good decade or more and it’s not hard to see that it’s reasonably priced.
