Sustainable Zoom-Zoom – The Mazda Skyactiv-X Mild Hybrid at Grand Prix Mazda Aspley

October 1, 2020

Grand Prix Mazda Aspley is getting ready to welcome Mazda’s new ground-breaking Skyactiv-X Mild Hybrid.

This compact, efficient new vehicle has the first electrification technology in the range, all of which contributes to Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 goals around driving pleasure combined with outstanding environmental and safety performance.

The launch of the Skyactiv-X Mild Hybrid follows on from the launch of the highly efficient Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-D engine technologies in 2012.

Charging ahead with battery technology

The mild hybrid system features a belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 24V lithium-ion battery, supporting greater gains in fuel economy by recycling energy recovered during deceleration and powering the ISG that then runs as an electric engine.

More power with less fuel

Skyactiv-X combines the best technology from both diesel and gasoline engines thanks to a new technology called Sparks Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI). Running on regular petrol, SPCCI works by compressing the fuel-air mix at a much higher compression ratio.

The Skyactiv-X engine uses a spark to ignite only a small, dense amount of the fuel-air mix in the cylinder. This raises the temperature and pressure so, like diesel, the remaining fuel-air mix ignites under pressure, burning faster and more completely than in conventional engines.

The result? Ten to 30 per cent more torque than the current Skyactive-G petrol engine with better fuel efficiency than the current Skyactive-D, and a power increase of 10 per cent.

Lowering emissions

Mazda Australia’s Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, says, “Mazda is committed to reducing real-world emissions by looking at every part of a vehicle’s emissions footprint, from its production through to where the fuel that powers it comes from, and how a vehicle is disposed of at the end of its life.”

The Skyactiv-X M Hybrid system is now available in the Mazda3 and in the Mazda CX-30 ranges.
